Alumni Testimonials

  • Winner in 2023, 2022, 2020. This award is given annually by the top clearinghouse of gap year programs, GoOverseas. Awards are based primarily on alumni testimonials (see our reviews below).

  • The best thing about our programs? The students who are drawn to them! We attract a diverse range of students who share a few things in common: they are looking for a multifaceted program that will engage their whole person: body, mind and soul. They are looking for a program with depth and authenticity. Many of them feel a bit burned out by traditional academics, but they want to keep learning, growing, creating and experiencing new things.

Our alums go on to very different colleges and careers. We currently have alums at UNC, NYU, UVM, Harvard, College of the Atlantic, Princeton, Berea, Dartmouth, Temple, Colorado, Brown, Bowdoin, Duke, Holy Cross, Illinois State, Bates, George Washington, Middlebury, Grinnell, Haverford, Pomona, Scripps, Bard, Richmond, Penn State, Santa Clara and many more. We have alums who are working in environmental engineering, film, farming, food, education, land management, outdoor recreation, law, medicine, etc.

About 70% of our students come to Seguinland as part of a traditional gap year between high school and college (age 18-19). About 30% of our students have taken 1-2 years of college (age 19-20). This latter group is often in the process of transferring to a new college. Within any give cohort there are generally a few students who are seeking alternatives to college.

Many of our alums return for a second or third program at Seguinland. All alums are welcome to attend our annual reunion on campus. We enjoy staying connected to our alums throughout their college years—and beyond. Our alums are the best. Please see their testimonials below.

Emeline, Good Life Alum, Fall ‘22 | Currently studying sustainability at Mt. Holyoke College: “My semester at Seguinland Institute has been nothing short of spectacular. I found a passion for life here - the rich, full good life of reciprocity with the earth and others. The faculty and staff have been instrumental in my success, and irreplaceable in finding my devotion to all life offers–and all I can offer to life. The three courses themselves are life-changing and encourage the big thinker in everyone to come out of hiding. These courses will ask a lot of you at times, but what meaningful challenge wouldn't? I can't describe how enlivening The Creative Life Course was in helping me see how easy it is to integrate creativity (and therefore enjoyment) into everything we do. I would not trade the experience this entire program--and student community--has given me for anything; especially compared to what a traditional college could offer me at this time. This was my first exposure to true education: how to smile more truthfully, laugh more fully, and love deeply and unconditionally.”

Arushi, Good Life Alum, Fall ‘22 | Currently at Illinois State University: “This experience felt like a fresh breath of life for me. I’m so grateful I took this chance. I’ve made lifelong memories and built a greater sense of confidence. This was my first time living without my family and I am straight out of high school. This program helped me feel more affirmed in the hope I have for my future and I am so excited to feel alive. The staff and faculty were like family who supported me through this huge change in my life. It felt like growing up in the best way. I enjoyed the kindness, openness and support all the staff gave us. Living in community takes a lot of effort and I’m glad I got to learn how to put that effort in. Something I wrote in my journal on the last few days of this program is “I didn’t know back then what all of this could mean, and I’m glad that I know now. I’m glad that I tried.” I’ll always think back fondly to dance parties in the cookhouse and the warmth of bonfires and friends.”

Jonathan, Good Life Alum, Fall ‘22 | Currently studying Philosophy & Religion at Hamilton College:“Seguinland will not be what you expect. It will not be what the instructors expect either. For each person, Seguinland is their own experience, and the staff and students are there to help them have the 10 weeks they want. I thought that Seguinland would be about seeing a different way of living unique to here, but I have learned so much about how I want to live my life and who I want to live it with. You will not be challenged to become a new person, but rather you will be challenged to be yourself, and find out what that means. The people at Seguinland are not that much more mindful or earthy than ordinary people, they aren’t hippies or gurus. They are just thoughtful people who have spent years working with students to build an experience that focuses on the community that students want to build, and the life they want to explore.”

Maurice, Good Life Alum, Fall ‘21 & Winter ‘23 | Just graduated from Indiana State University, working in film & podcasting: “The experience of Seguinland Institute’s Good Life Gap Semester has shaped my way of living, thinking, eating, connecting with mind, body, spirit, and the way I approach relationships. This was probably the most impactful experience of my life.  From the yoga sessions to hiking to watching the sunrise to volunteering in community settings, it truly felt like a dream. Throughout the courses, I felt like I rediscovered ways of learning and being creative that I had lost along the way. I broadened my perspective on the world through the readings and the discussions. I learned the importance of our current part in creating a better world, especially from the faculty and guest speakers I met during the program. They've opened my eyes to a new world, and I'm forever grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you, Seguinland.”

Clara, Good Life Alum: Fall ‘20 & May ‘21 | Currently at Pomona College:“Participating in the Good Life Gap Term was one of the most impactful experiences I could have imagined having during my gap year. For anyone looking to challenge themselves academically, physically, and emotionally while grounding in nature and intentional community, this program is for you! While at the Seguinland Institute, I became a student of the salt-water river flowing through the property, of the starry Maine sky, of each of my classmates and of course, of the engaging, and ever-accommodating faculty. The courses, which challenged me to question and ponder my sense of purpose, values, and lifestyle, were supplemented with experiences of solitude, camping and canoeing trips, hikes, yoga and mindfulness, and walks on the ocean-side beaches nearby. Though the program presents challenges, it simultaneously creates a thoroughly supportive community, brings attention to self-compassion and natural healing, and nourishes participants with locally grown food. Not to mention, the program is full of fun adventures, laughs, and spontaneous dance parties.”

Anoosh, Good Life Alum, Fall ‘21 | Currently studying environmental engineering at George Washington University: My experience at the Good Life Gap Semester at Seguinland was ineffable. The institute partakes of an inspiring and experimental approach to education. The courses went beyond the books we read and the lessons we were taught, and were filled with rich discussions, memorable trips, and influential visitors that brought the lessons to life. I explored what a good life is for me and learned ways to tackle societal challenges. All the while, my classmates and I created an intentional community and lived on a scenic homestead. Our mornings included various forms of mindfulness in a classroom up in the trees, our nights cooking meals at the cookhouse and watching the bright stars. Each week was filled with different adventures such as hiking, camping, foraging, or volunteering at a local farm that gives its crops to those in need. The program challenged me--mentally, spiritually, and physically--for the better. I have endless gratitude for the friendships, staff, and memories I created during my time at Seguinland.

Good Life Gap Program in Maine

Garrett, Good Life Alum, May ‘21 | Recent graduate of the University of Maine Farmington; double major in Philosophy & Psychology: My time at Seguinland was uniquely transformative. It was such a gift to experience a level of community & tranquility I had not heretofore encountered in an academic setting. That is to say, this isn't the average academic setting – it is the exceptional one. You'll read Wendell Berry waxing poetic about the wonders of sustainable agriculture, while planting seeds & tending to the on-site gardens. You'll read about Thoreau's adventures in the Maine wilderness as you spend time in that same wilderness (and perhaps even climb Katahdin!). You'll meditate, canoe, hike, introspect, laugh, dance, cook, forage, & share meals with one another on the transcendently picturesque Maine coast. All while surrounded by an inimitably loving & thoughtful crew of educators, artists, poets, & peers – Family. At Seguinland, one doesn't just learn about the good life. One is given the rare opportunity to live it out in a supportive, inclusive, and curious environment.

Noah, Good Life Alum, Fall ‘20 | Currently studying Philosophy and Pre Law Haverford College: At Seguinland you find philosophy, cool readings, excursions, caring & kind mentors, eye-opening guests, & space for as much growth as you want to work for. You’ll be expected to be engaged & put in work, to share & challenge old beliefs & ways of being. You’ll gain clarity, confidence, new thoughts, new friendships. The people are inclusive, genuine, & lovely. Nature, yoga, meditation & readings all helped me be calm, open up & connect. Music, dancing, communal activities like cooking, sauna, hiking, camping, canoeing helped students bond. I have grown in presence & calm awareness. I have expanded my view of the land & I want to bring it forward. I’ve learned how to connect more deeply w/ people around me.

Jacob, Good Life Alum, May ‘21 | Recent graduate of the University of North Texas; Geography major: Nestled into the marshes of Back River Bend and intimately intertwined with the land, Seguinland Institute is a respite. In looking for somewhere to center myself, I found a community that welcomed me readily and taught me more than I could’ve imagined. No part of me thought I’d “learn” to dance wildly in the moonlight; no part of me really wanted to learn to dance at all. The courses at Seguinland are engaging and refreshing, fostering vulnerable and honest discussions about anything from the good life to sustainable food. Everyone I encountered quickly became beloved peers and teachers−fellow adventurers and friends. It’s hard to imagine where I’d be without this experience, the connections I formed through it, and all that I learned in Maine. My personal cherry on top was starting each morning with yoga in the Gathering Space, a beautiful “classroom” built above ground−among the trees−and handcrafted by native Seguindland-ers!

Juliet, Good Life Alum: Fall ‘20 & May ‘21 | Currently at Dartmouth College: I’ve grown in many ways here: in my ability to connect with others & myself on a deep, open, honest, authentic level. I’ve learned to feel comfortable in my own skin & love authentically and deliberately. I’ve also learned how to let loose, give myself a break and do fun, goofy things - to connect with my inner child. All these things will impact my future, allow me to form more meaningful connections & bring joy into my life. Seguinland is a place to explore the good life and bring love into our fight for justice. Its people who have come together to learn about themselves, form deep relationships, and figure out how to create meaning. It is a place to re-discover a love of learning & rekindle our connection to the land and nature.

Anya, Good Life Alum: Fall ‘20 & May ‘21 | Currently at College of the Holy Cross: Seguinland is a place to relearn and rethink our world and the “normal” or popular ways of doing things. Here you can put yourself as your first priority and give attention to your thoughts and your body. You can fall in love with the earth’s gifts by having time and space to appreciate them. The approach here is to learn with enjoyment and curiosity. The faculty are passionate and just as curious as the students. Nothing is set in stone; they are open to new ideas as long as we are. Since coming to Seguinland, I’ve become an active and engaged listener. I’ve learned how important nature is to grounding myself...that being present in nature is the best way to heal and to grow.

Emily, Good Life Alum: Fall ‘20 & May ‘21 | Currently at University of Vermont: I would say that Seguinland is a safe space to open up your heart and become comfortable with yourself. If you have never hiked before, don’t worry - you can do it! The approach here is easy going yet meaningful & educational, welcoming & caring. Faculty aren’t just your teachers, but your friends. The guest speakers are excited to share their ideas. You’ll need to be vulnerable and open to new ideas, but you will gain a new perspective and a path toward living the good life. I’ve climbed a mountain and paddled to an island! Everyone was supportive, always trying to make me comfortable and praising my courage.  I can now sit with my discomfort. I can move towards a path of loving myself. I can focus on the simple things.

My biggest takeaway from my time at Seguinland is to embrace the unexpected. In your time here you will practice the art of getting lost and then found again. You will face challenges, physically, mentally, and come out stronger on the other side. Kayak trips, crazy hikes, hours of solitude, and hard conversations are bookended with gorgeous, mindful mornings in the gathering space and cozy nights in the cookhouse surrounded by great food and better friends. You will get muddy, paint-y, tired, hungry, sweaty, giggly, pee-yourself-laugh-y, contemplate-philosophically-y, warmed, fed, hugged, taught, and loved unconditionally by a strong, tight knit community.

Seguinland is wonderful! The program allowed me to explore every unexpected creative outlet, live in a wonderful, authentic community, try all new perspectives and challenges, and will truly stick with my for life. I grew in so many ways and found new capabilities, friendships and passions. I am more authentic, creative, confident and joyful because of my time in The Good Life Gap Semester. The Seguinland staff gave me such a sense of home away from home and have so much kindness and support in their hearts. What will stick with me the most is the people, everyone in the program was so loving and down to earth and it was so unique to be able to build a community all together. My time at Seguinland is unforgettable.

"I came here to question my life and instead I fell in love with it." Truly indescribable. I could say that this program is 10 weeks of yoga, discussions, dance parties, readings, painting, thinking, camping, bonfires, dishes, movie nights, family dinners and more but it would not even begin to explain the scope of it all. I was challenged in all regards–you push yourself to new comfort zones and have a whole community behind you as you do it. I will come away from this with 19 lifelong friends and 8 mentors.

I don’t know what I was expecting from Seguinland but it never failed to surprise me. I found a community full of love, respect and support. I created bonds that will hopefully last for life. I got out of my comfort zone and did things I would never have thought of doing, like hiking a mountain at 3am and kayaking for hours. I found a group of staff that understood us and treated us like adults. I found knowledge within myself while holding my friends’ hands through this path. I found peace in solitude and comfort in my community. I found a new family and with amazing perspectives to life. Loved it and would totally recommend it!

Seguinland Institute is an indescribable experience. They gather all aspects of the good life – from community to creativity to food – and explore each with kindness and passion. If you attend Seguinland you will no doubt make lifelong friends while discovering so many new and amazing things about yourself. You’ll be challenged both physically and intellectually, but it never seems like too much to take in. Every experience you have is filled with wonder and is so rewarding. The staff builds relationships with each member of our sweet little community and truly feels like family by the end. Seguinland really has something for everyone and it will always have a place in my heart❤️

I had the most amazing time at Seguinland! It was definitely the perfect program for me. The beautiful campus and the fresh air provides the perfect place to learn and grow. The things that I was nervous about coming into the program vanished once I got there. The first few days were mostly focused on getting to know the program, place, and people, which eased a lot of my anxiety. The staff were also great at accommodating needs (allergies, time for students to have online appointments, etc.). But above all, even though the program itself was nearly flawless, the thing that made it perfect was the other students. I have always been a pretty quiet person and it takes a while for me to open up. I was nervous that I wouldn't make any friends but by the time I left after 10 weeks, I walked away with 19 people that I now consider family. The time we shared together will always stick with me and have a special place in my heart.

Great friends, great experiences. Beautiful location and living environment. Something I will cherish forever. Everything was done so deliberately and in a way that always kept you engaged. From food to class to excursions everything was fantastic and I’m so glad that I attended this program. The lake is really beautiful its such a peaceful setting, you can be isolated from the noise of the world and really help discover yourself. You have to put a lot of work in but if you give yourself fully then you will undoubtedly get even more out of it than you put in.

The Good Life Gap Semester was transformative. I made life-long friends, had rich & intellectual conversations, and reflected deeply on what I value and how I want to live. Most of all, everything felt intentional. It was clear that the staff cared about the program and wanted everyone to succeed. This was definitely passed on to the students. As cliché as it sounds, our cohort was like a family. The program is academic–you’ll engage with big ideas as a community. Your professors are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and committed. Seguinland is unlike anything you’ll ever experience. I can’t recommend it enough.

This experience was, by far, the best choice I could have made for my gap term. I feel as if I found a part of myself here- I've made lifetime friends in the community we established, rediscovered a passion for learning about and engaging with the world around me, and genuinely felt what it means to live the Good Life. I'm incredibly grateful I had this opportunity, and feel so much more mature, confident, and loved having had it. From baking in the cookhouse to midnight movies to crabbing to dancing in the forest under the full moon, from the world to Maine to all of us; Seguinland is the kind of place where love abounds, where the seals swim through the back-rivers, and where you come home to a home you never knew you had.

Living at Seguinland helped me connect with the earth, introduced me to some seriously good humans, strengthened my writing, and better equipped me with everyday skills.

We lived on the marsh and hurled our voices into its echo, greeted the days with yoga, slid down the snowy bridge at night, took walks beneath a starry sky, cared for our own house and home, spent each day writing and reading, left our doors entirely open for conversations when the going got tough, hiked, skied, sled, and simply were.

FALL: My experience at Seguinland Insitute in the good life gap semester program was fantastic in many ways. It feels like you're living in a family, not just because students are surrounded by the real-life families (including kids) of the staff - who are largely part of one family - on a daily basis, but also because of the community-based structure of the entire program: all the meals (except for the rare occasion) are home-cooked and all the dinners are eaten together. The student body is small enough for each and every student to get to know each other during the duration of the program. Instead of the usual apartment style dorms that are common in post-high school education, the students stay in very well-furnished and cozy cottages. Mine had a kitchenette stocked with just about every kitchen item you'd need on a day to day basis. The program is built to build quality relationships with students, Earth, the staff, our inner landscape, and teaches students what the good life is in a very very individualized way - direct experience. The campus is very beautiful and everyone in the program loves music, the outdoors, and new and interesting experiences.

WINTER: This program is absolutely amazing. It has a very, very, very strong community aspect to it, and students are encouraged every day to be their fullest and best selves. Expect adventure and trying things you’ve never tried before, whether it be going straight from a sauna to a frozen pond to dog sledding to cooking on a fire. This was my second time at Seguinland, but it was still the experience of a lifetime. The staff are extremely extremely supportive and they manage to make every single program new so returning students and new students experience brand new programming. The food is also good, and food that is made in the program is very, very healthy. expect to be immersed day after day in nature, and to embrace a lifestyle of minimal technology, as phones and computers are expected to be left in the cabins if students are not using them for educational purposes (which is a relatively rare occurrence). Expect to embrace mindfulness, and to learn how to embrace new perspectives, and journey in word, as well as outward. Philosophical and very otherwise deep discussions are an undeniable facet of this program and everyone, students and staff alike, are ready to talk about anything. The environment is extremely inclusive and every single day there’s more and more things to learn. The campus is in the woods and is extremely extremely beautiful. The main gathering space is a treehouse. For photographers, get ready to take some amazing, amazing photos in your free time. This program was an intensive writing program, and so students were diving deep into various forms of writing. For any writer, this program is so amazing. Whether your writing style is poetry, songwriting, fiction, or something else, the staff embrace all of it.

I was lucky enough to receive an education in living the Good Life following an extended period of pandemic-related isolation. There couldn't have been a better way to restore my faith in humanity and the joy of human connection than this program. The professors, staff, and fellow students have a unique joie de vivre and an insuperable capacity for empathy. The program encourages connection with others, a re-connection with nature, and a deeper engagement with oneself through creative and collaborative activities, intellectual discussions, trips into the Maine wilderness, and a radical reconsideration of our societal habits, both modern and ancient. I'll carry the experience with me for as long as I live.

The marsh welcomed me onto it's land. It gave me views I'll always remember, woods to immerse myself in, and a breathtaking amount of stars.
It was truly about the people. Phillip and his family let us become apart of their lives, teaching courses but also giving us space to grow as they supported us in every way. The guests we met were inspiring and provided such rich moments. I was naturally drawn in to close friendships with the other students.
Allow yourself to be open minded and vulnerable and you'll find yourself changed.

My time at Seguinland Institute is indescribable. Surrounded by the serene marsh and river, students are able to connect with not only their selves, but also their fellow students, nature, and literature. Students learn not only from the syllabus but also by the very experience itself. Daily yoga helps to start each day with mindfulness. This program would be best for students interested in nature, hiking, kayaking/canoeing, farming, cooking, reassign and art. The ability to perform basic tasks independently is necessary as students are required to make breakfast at lunch, do their own laundry, keep a clean shared room, share cleaning tasks with housemates, and help with group dinner prep and clean up. the program is everything the website describes and more. I had no idea what I had gotten myself into before coming to this program but within a few days I was quickly captivated by the culture I found at Seguinland. The program does such an amazing job of combining mindfulness and personal self-reflection with hands-on environmental education and creativity. Everything we did felt so personal and the program coordinators always took time to listen to our suggestions and adjust the program as needed. You will become so close with the small group of students you live and learn alongside of as well as the Francis family, who welcomes you into their life. I can't recommend this program enough!

This program is the best decision I've ever made. I know that the things I learned in each of the good life courses will stay with me forever and it is impossible to describe the impact that each of the faculty has had on me. Georgetown and all its natural beauty is the ideal location to rediscover what it means to live mindfully and find what matters most to you. Everyone comes to this program for a different reason, and students have a variety of experiences and goals going in. This allows for meaningful and memorable discussion because ideas are examined from a variety of perspectives. The community is unlike any other; everyone was so kind and cared deeply about each other as well as learning with an open mind.

This program has changed my life, and has left me with some of the best friends I have ever met. Prior to the Seguinland, I knew it was going to be a fun and adventurous experience. However, it also ended up being insightful and meaningful, and truthfully life changing. I discovered new passions and respect for the world, myself and others. Not a day goes by where something doesn't remind me of my time spent at Seguinland. I'm forever grateful for having been apart of this special program, and making life long relationships with the people I was surrounded with.

I had a fantastic time at the Good Life Gap Term. The curriculum explores philosophy, environmental justice, and creativity, all facets of what "the good life" can look like. I'm so happy I got to reconnect with nature and discover the joy of being a beginner. At Seguin I tried so many new things (new readings, new recipes, new artistic mediums), and I realized how rewarding that can be. I am so grateful for the friends I made, too. We dove into the course material with open minds, cooked and shared meals together, explored Maine, and created memories I will never forget, especially hiking in Acadia at sunrise. Together we built a vibrant and supportive community. The experience I had at the Good Life Gap Term continues to guide me today, reminding me to go outside, appreciate nature's gifts, listen, read, and create.

Firstly, I'd like to remark on how grateful I am for an opportunity such as this one. I can't recall anticipating that an experience like this would change the trajectory of my life for the best. While coming with the intention to figure out my direction in life, Seguin introduced me to a new sense of novelty, adventure, and relationships, that I had never experienced before. Seguin helped me understand how I can live within the duality of learning while living intentionally. From adventuring to islands, camping, foraging, solitude, and cooking, all the way to the academic side of the program, there's a lot to experience. However, I do believe in transparency and honesty. As someone who's always suffered from anxiety and being included, I found myself often straying away from moments to be included in certain parts of the program, due to my own expectations. This doesn't disregard the moments when I did push myself to try new things, which I did a lot of during this program. If you're deciding to take on a program such as this one, come with no intention and no expectations. Because by the end of the program and the months after, you'll begin to see the program's positive longevity and the pursuance that it has on your life.

Like many city dwellers, days, weeks, months, and years all flew by in a blur. The shifting of the seasons was something I barely noticed. I often felt rushed and anxious. During my first time at Seguinland, there was a shift in my perspective. The assigned readings, discussion questions, and group dynamics required me to ground myself in the present and pay attention to my surroundings. I felt deep gratitude for my teachers and classmates and the insightful conversations we shared without cellphones or computers between us. I witnessed the beautiful natural landscape around me with all five senses and meditated for hours on end. I left the program feeling refreshed, motivated, and feeling in love with life. The course introduced me to a lot of the concepts and life philosophies that I am still deeply passionate about. Thanks, Seguinland! “Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished.Tell about it.” -Mary Oliver. A few things I saw while at Seguinland: a bald eagle perched on a pine tree across the river, beautiful treehouses built by hand, a full moon rising followed by a meteor shower.

The education I received at the Good Life Course goes deeper than understanding mindful concepts. It was a mind, body, and soul experience. My mind was enhanced by the readings of Braiding Sweetgrass and Consolations as well as the discussions that followed. My body was challenged to break out of its comfort zone and go ziplining, canoeing, hiking and to try yoga. My soul was revitalized from meditation, good conversation, solitude and friends. From this course I learned how to see beauty, and how to find balance. The course allowed for self-discovery and gave me the skills (my backpack) to start my post-college life.

I find myself returning to the ideas of this course on a regular basis. When life is hectic and overwhelming I lean into the teachings of The Good Life. I will be forever thankful for the memories and teachings I gained at Seguinland Institute.

This is class wonderfully integrates the outdoor experience of the coast of Maine with intellectually stimulating academic content. In the course, students learn of the importance of maintaining a relationship with nature, the Self, and other life-long learners. Intermingling with students from Manhattan College (I am from UMF) was a wonderful opportunity to speak with students with different life experiences than the majority of us, finding comfort in our commonalities and new interests in our differences. The course material has a focus on the natural environment that is rooted in Transcendentalist and Taoist philosophy which allows one to take a much-needed break from modern living.

I grew up in Maine so I am pretty used to being outdoors but the sites and adventures I got to experience here were once in a lifetime. The sites that we visited were all amazing. The little islands we went to were amazing. I have always been nervous of deep water but the people there made me feel safe and comfortable. For one of the first times in my life I was alright on the water. The morning yoga was very relaxing and much more enjoyable than I previously expected it to be. Overall I would say that this is an excellent opportunity for anyone.

From the stomping grounds of the city that never sleeps, my life had become overwhelmed with stress, daunting professional expectations, and a spiraling loss of direction. My return to nature and experiences with personal reflection helped me find purpose for my days. The Atlantic coasts of Georgetown, Maine and the energy that radiates from the Back River, lifted me into another perception of my own reality. The Good Life Course promotes spiritual growth from within, making the experience truly a one of a kind lifetime memory. My carvings from Maine will walk with me deep into my professional career here in NYC and I am forever thankful for the eye-opening lessons that only Prof. Francis and his genuine staff could provide. I will for sure return to Francisville and will be sure to bring others along to experience the life changing escape. Sending nothing but love to my family up in Georgetown! Bless!

The Good Life Course was one of the most profound experiences I have had in my life. I come from a very technical and science based background, but I throughly enjoyed our philosophical discussions on what constitutes a good life. The readings were also incredibly enlightening and there was no shortage of fun activities and great food! Georgetown is downright gorgeous and is the perfect place to be discussing and cultivating the philosophy of the good life. Leaving the course, you will no doubt feel refreshed, prepared, and invigorated to live your wild and precious life.

One of the things I really appreciated the first time around going on the trip is the amount of diversity the trip has to offer for everybody. There are a number of people living on the peninsula who have different expertise in so many different fields, which makes it good because there's something for everybody to fall in love with and someone to look up to. Francis has literature, religion and philosophy; Lawrence has poetry; Ruth has farming; his dad has construction; then there's Justin with mindful meditation; and Meg with writing and Yoga. Along the way he also brings in some very interesting special guest, different for everybody. Even if you talk to professor's kids you can learn a thing or two about wonder and awe!

Before going on this trip I only knew one other person, and I had extreme social anxiety at the time. You could imagine how I felt going into a two week stay in a place I had never been living with people I really did not know. Once I got there my anxieties went away. Professor Francis, the other students on the trip, and his family/friends we worked and learned beside were some of the best people I have ever meet. Through this experience I was able to reflect on my life and open my eyes to change. This two weeks really allowed me to start making plan and executing about how I want to live a “good life.” For me it started by becoming more sustainable and now as I have just graduated moving away to start my good life. I honestly do not know if I would be where I am today if it was not for this class. I’m so grateful Professor Francis and the class he provided!

As a student in the first year this course, I wasn't sure what to expect, but was eager to learn how to live simply a good life and embark on a 2 week journey in Maine. Since taking Professor Francis for another religion course, I only knew the class was going to be great. Everyday was carefully designed and planned out with new adventures, challenges, and experiences. From reading, kyaking, learning new trades, enjoying time with new friends, and studying the works of many authors and philosophers, every moment was enjoyable. I developed and grew as a person throughout this course from the diversity of the group, the teachings, experiences, and being in a new environment. The hospitality of the Francis family is something I will never forget. The family is so creative, welcoming, and admirable. I can't wait for the day I get to enjoy the beauty of Georgetown Maine again.

I like to consider myself an outdoorsy person but since I had started college I felt like I had lost track of that part in myself. Taking this course open my eyes to the side of myself I lost and reconnected me with the beauty and light that nature holds. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming; you will never feel judged or like you don’t belong; truly the best experience in my life that I will never forget. You could barely know the people you were with and by the end they’re family and it will be a memory that you will cherish forever!

Take it!! Wonderful experience enjoyed the outdoors, great literature and engaged is some great thought and discussion. Prof. Francis is an excellent professor, approachable and easy to talk to and offers amazing insight around the subjects taught within the day. As a city kid, I never imagined myself walking through the woods and mud and enjoying it. Made me truly appreciate the outdoors and introduced me to subjects that I never thought of exploring before. Highly recommend for people who grew up in cities.

This trip in Maine will always hold a special place in my heart. It was an opportunity to take a step back from our daily routines and learn to be more simplistic. Philip Francis and the Seguinland Institute team are truly a phenomenal group of people who share and teach valuable lessons through lectures and hands on activities. Appreciating nature’s beauty, surrounding yourself in a positive atmosphere, and expanding your mind are just a few of the many things that make this experience so special.

The program as a whole was nothing short of incredible. The course dives deep into the core values of what it means to truly live deliberately and how to get the most out of the one life we have. The staff is made up of some the most soulful people you'll ever meet who gear their time towards helping and teaching those around them. I would reccomend to anyone looking to do something a little different, and to get away from daily distractions, especially if you're coming from a large city background.

I've always had a love for nature and the outdoors. This was my first time visiting Maine and I fell in love with its beauty. The property itself is vast and gorgeous. Philip Francis was an amazing professor and it felt like everything we did was well thought out and tied directly back into what we were learning. I felt like I could really open up and be candid with emotions and what the class brought up for me because my classmates and teachers were all so supportive. It's been 4 years since my trip to Maine and I still talk about this class all the time because I found it so impactful.

As a student who grew up in the hustle and bustle of New York City, it was great to get away and learn in the natural beauty of Maine. Each day was filled with great readings, hands on experiences, and thoughtful conversations that helped me open my eyes to what it means to live a good life. I know that all sounds kind of vague, but part of the course is learning to participate instead of anticipate! You are in incredibly good hands with the Francis family and their friends and you will certainly feel very welcomed throughout your stay. By the end of my time in the course, I definitely learned how to live the good life and how to continue living that good life back in my city home. I also walked away with many life long friends and incredible memories! So if you’re considering taking this course, do it, you won’t regret it.

The time I had, and the people I met during this course, I will not soon forget. The life experience and kindness of everyone involved in the Good Life course is inspiring. If you want to read philosophy next to the ocean, do yoga on a platform in the trees, and learn from amazing people, you should look no further. This course was always exciting and always provided new experiences. It gave me the chance to get away for a moment and think about what it means to have a "good life". The course provided me with experiences to draw from to help me build a good life for myself.

Unlike other courses I've taken, this program has shown me the importance of an open mind, provided meaningful information, and has given me a new mindset on various aspects of my life. We were introduced to different ideas, themes, and readings about the good life. We also focused on the importance of connecting with nature, whether it be walking barefoot or kayaking. In a place as beautiful as Georgetown, it was easy to pause and reflect at any given moment or connect with the environment around us. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to take this course, as it is clear it has proven to be life-changing.

The Good Life program with Professor Francis and his staff was one of the most impactful and memorable experiences I have ever participated in. The location and accommodations are breathtaking; the program promotes new ways of thinking and seeing the world; the staff are brilliant, supportive, positive and fun individuals; And you’ll make new friends and participate in fun, educational and engaging experiences! I wish I could go back every year! If you are someone who enjoys the outdoors, loves the water, looks forward to new experiences, enjoys intellectually stimulating conversations and would appreciate spending time in beautiful Maine, this is the program for you!

It’s been years since I first took this class. So many things in my life has changed, but the things I got out of this class are stable. It is more than just a class. Life lessons, experiences, and friends. I still talk about this class to almost everyone I know, and try to get people to read the books we studied. I still go back to what I learned here when I’m in distress. The professor and his family are some of the greatest people I’ve ever met, and the lessons that you learn here are ones that they all live by. It’s one thing to learn about something by reading it, but seeing how it can actually be applied to life really helped it sink in. Do yourself a favor and take part in this.

Taking the Good Life Course with the Francis family was one of the most unforgettable experiences. As someone who is well-traveled, I would easily say Maine beat any other location I have gone. From stepping foot in Georgetown I became one of the newest members of the Francis family. Staying in the cabins (or even a YURT) with strangers (who became family) was the first thing to push me from my comfort zone. Throughout the two weeks following, I was constantly encouraged to go out of my comfort zone, explore new places, and expand on thoughts I never had. My favorites memories range from: kayaking to group meetings on abandoned islands, ZIPLINGIN to yoga class, swimming in FREEZING water, clamming, and of course the famous lobster bake. Also, not to mention that everywhere you go you will be blown away by the BEAUTY that Maine has to offer!!

I attended the Good Life in 2015, during its debut year. The experience I gained there made a great impact on me, and I continue to learn from the lessons I gained there. If you are looking for a great time to enjoy the outdoors and to enjoy learning about philosophy, I recommend this program. As for the food, there is nothing as satisfying as having a lobster from Maine, in Maine. As part of the program in 2015, our group got to try the lobsters that had been caught the same day. In addition to eating great food, we explored the waters and visited various islands around Bath, Maine. Again, I would recommend anyone to take this course.

This program is life-changing. I've participated in the Good Life course for two summers, truly some of the best experiences I've ever had. The first time I was there, I learned to reflect on the beauty of the good life. Two years later, I returned to learn what it means to shower the world with gifts of beauty in the good life. This will be a trip where you will have the opportunity to explore the wild, the beauty, the wonder, the solitude, the silence, the self-reliance, and the simplicity in the Good Life. To read wonderful works by Henry David Thoreau and Annie Dillard, sitting in the garden, by the sea, on a tree. Doing all that, while bonding with a beautiful group of classmates and friends. Grateful for all the life-long friends that I have met over this trip, grateful for the Good Life.

Doing the Good Life Gap Term was such an amazing experience and something I will never forget. During my time in Maine, I made so many friends that I still keep in touch with today and we will forever have a bond of sharing great memories from our time in Maine. I learned so many life lessons while also learning a lot about myself. This trip not only impacted my life while I was in Maine, but it impacted my life once I came home as well. I carry all of the things that I learned with me throughout my day to day life. I came home having a new outlook on life and am forever grateful for my time spent here.

My experience was unique because going to Maine and truly enjoying nature wasn’t something I could ever imagine myself doing until I arrived. But when I got there, it was clear that the program was going to be very memorable, and it was going to bring us very close to each other. Not only did the Francises show us many ways to appreciate nature, but they taught us how to expand our minds and how to look at the big picture when life gets tough. My time in Maine brought me clarity and peace of mind, and thinking of Maine and the Francises helps me find that clarity in my daily life at college. I have no doubt that the lessons I learned, as well as the friendships I formed, will stay with me forever. While everyone’s experience in Maine will be different, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t remember theirs as fondly as I remember mine.
